Blepharoplasty (Eyelid Reshaping)

Overview

Eyelid reshaping can have a dramatic effect on a patients’ appearance, eliminating excess skin causing droopy top lids and bags from under the eye. Eyelid reshaping is often performed on younger patients to create a more symmetrical eye shape, or in the case of the Asian face, to give the effect referred to as “double eyelid”.

Options in this type of surgery include the choice of a laser versus the scalpel. Many classically trained surgeons prefer the scalpel; however doctors who have learnt their craft using a laser will endorse this method of operating.

Laser eyelids – The surgeon uses a laser light source to cut the skin, many doctors who use a laser for resurfacing may recommend this method;

Scalpel surgery
– The classically trained surgeons normally prefer this method;

Double eyelids
– A procedure to create a natural crease in the top lid. Used frequently for Asian eyes.

The Surgical Plan

The operation will take between 1 to 2 hours, with either general anaesthetic or sedation and local anaesthetic. If the procedure is performed in hospital the patient need only stay for a few hours. Some doctors will offer this operation as an office procedure.

Small incisions are made in the crease of the upper and under the lash line of the lower lid. Any excess fatty deposits behind the skin are removed and the incisions are closed with fine stitches. Clear tape is applied over the suture line and ice packs are used to reduce swelling.

FAQs

Is eyelid reshaping painful?
During the operation the area will be numb and the patient will have no feeling to the area. Some hours afterwards the eyes may feel tired and a little “gritty” although not painful.

Will eyelid reshaping affect my sight?
The operation is for the eyelid area only and therefore should not affect any sight. Your surgeon will explain any risk to sight and how this will be avoided.

How long will I need to recover?
Expect some swelling, maybe some bruising for 3 to 10 days. Most patients look recovered at 5 days and may even apply make-up at approximately 7 days.
